2008-2009 Goals
- Assist with implementation of the Downtown Miami Master Plan 2008 by appointing task force chairs to suggest priorities and report on progress to the New World Center Committee for Flagler Promenade/Central Business District; Omni/Park West District; Biscayne Waterfront District; Brickell District; Miami River District; and Parking/Traffic/Transportation.
- Help improve services on the streets such as safety, security, traffic, lighting, sanitation, and cleanliness by working with appropriate agencies and service providers.
- Develop a collaborative plan to create a behavioral shift in the community about downtown as a desirable place to live, work and play, by designing and implementing a new approach to marketing the downtown area, changing attitudes and offering incentives to attract people downtown.
- Recognize community leaders who are doing important things for downtown and advocate legislation aimed at improving downtown.
Information You Can Use
Miami River dredging has been a long term goal of the GMCC. Led by the Miami River Commission, the long-awaited maintenance dredging of the Miami River began on September 25, 2004. This $74 million project took 32 years and involved cooperation in Washington, Tallahassee, Jacksonville and local government. The dredging is expected to take two to four years to complete. Good Morning Miami Breakfast Series – Good Morning Miami Breakfast November 2007 program discussed the transformation of downtown Miami. Distinguished mayors shared their secrets of creating a vibrant downtown. The panel featured Bill Hudnut, senior resident fellow of the Urban Land Institute and former mayor of Indianapolis; Glenda Hood, former Florida Secretary of State and former mayor of Orlando; and Anthony Williams, CEO of Primum Public Realty Trust and former mayor of Washington D.C.
