Florida Power & Light Company

Providing Affordable, Reliable, Clean Energy

Florida Power & Light Company is the largest electric utility in Florida and one of the largest rate-regulated utilities in the United States. FPL serves approximately 4.5 million customer accounts in Florida and is a leading employer in the state with 10,500 employees. The company has consistently outperformed national averages, delivering higher service reliability, lower operations and maintenance costs per kilowatt hour, lower emissions rates and lower overall customer bills.

Most Affordable Electric Service in Florida

By operating efficiently and responsibly, Florida Power & Light has kept customer bills the lowest of all 55 electric companies in Florida. FPL has improved the fuel efficiency of its fossil power plant fleet by 13 percent since 2000 and by 19 percent since 1990. Today, FPL’s fossil power plant fleet uses only about 8,200 British Thermal Units of heat from fuel to produce a kilowatt-hour of electricity, or nearly 20 percent less than the fossil industry average of 10,100. Since 2002 alone, FPL’s investments in making its power plants more efficient have saved its customers an estimated $3 billion in fuel costs.

Well Above Average Service Reliability

Florida Power & Light has a long-term, comprehensive plan in place to deliver reliable electric service. The average amount of time FPL customers were without power in 2009 was 82.4 minutes. This performance is 46 percent better than the latest national average of 152.8 minutes in 2008.

One of the Cleanest Utilities Florida Power & Light uses a diverse mix of fuels at its power plants to generate reliable electricity. Because of its low-carbon fuel mix, FPL has one of the lowest emissions profiles among U.S. utilities. FPL’s carbon dioxide emissions rate, for example, is 35 percent better than the industry average. FPL currently obtains 56 percent of its electricity from clean-burning natural gas. Nuclear power, which produces no greenhouse gas emissions, is responsible for another 21 percent of power production. In addition, FPL has begun operation of two commercial-scale solar generation facilities and is completing an additional solar facility in the Sunshine State that will be online by the end of 2010.

A National Leader in Energy Efficiency and Load Control

Florida Power & Light has saved more megawatts through demand-side management programs than all but one other utility in the country. These efforts have allowed FPL to avoid building 13 medium-size power plants since 1980.
